Dr. Germano Performs Nation’s First AI-powered Hip Replacement

July 31, 2025

Artificial intelligence is making waves in medicine, and Orlin & Cohen’s board-certified and fellowship-trained joint replacement specialist Dr. James A. Germano is at the forefront. As chairman of orthopedics at Long Island Jewish Valley Stream and vice president of orthopedics at Northwell Health, Dr. Germano is the first surgeon in the U.S. to use a new AI-assisted system for hip replacement surgery.

The cutting-edge technology, developed by the Swedish company Ortoma, enables surgeons to plan and perform procedures more precisely and efficiently, reducing the time needed for preoperative scans while increasing accuracy during surgery. Dr. Germano explained to Newsday that instead of waiting up to two weeks for CT scan results, this system analyzes the data in just a few minutes, allowing for faster, more informed decision-making before entering the operating room.

During surgery, the system provides a 3D view of the patient’s anatomy, helping to better guide the placement of the implant with “exact data on the screen,” according to Dr. Germano. The first patient to benefit from this breakthrough was Dorothy Martino, 75, of Oceanside, who relied on a cane before her surgery. Now, she’s back on her feet, faster than expected.
