Eric Price, M.D., is a board-certified, fellowship-trained sports medicine specialist. Q:
Why did you want to start a career in orthopedics?
A:
I love working with my hands. When I was a kid, I loved Legos and would build stuff endlessly. I loved taking stuff apart and putting it back together. In college I hurt my shoulder and saw an orthopedist and thought, "wow, what a cool job." It was a perfect match for my interest in hands-on work, problem solving, and caring for others.

What's the best part of your job?
A:
When I was younger, it was about loving to do surgery. I still do, but now that I’ve got some years under my belt, my favorite part is the feeling you get when you help someone deal with whatever is in front of them and make their challenge less daunting. At the core of it, all patients worry “Am I going to be OK?” If I can help people lose that anxiety and get them back to feeling OK (or even better) and back to what they love, then I did my job.

Q:
What do you do in your free time, when you’re not seeing patients?
A:
Family first. I can’t wait to get home to see them. But if I am not with them, I am on my surfboard—I am incurably addicted to the ocean. If there are no waves, I am on my mountain bike. I also love to travel, especially internationally. It wakes up a part of your brain that’s been asleep for a while when you get to see how others live, eat, speak, etc.

A:
I was born in Rome, Italy, and came here when I was four.

How does your personal experience recovering from a sports-related injury and surgery benefit your patients?
A:
I understand the injury, surgery, and recovery experience from a patient's perspective. I know that the whole process is scary and requires a lot of faith in your doctor. I do my very best to make the experience as smooth as possible and I strive to minimize the worries that come with injury. Dealing with the injury is hard enough, worrying "will I ever be back to normal?" can drive you nuts. I know because I've been there. I hope that my experience as a patient has made me a better doctor and has translated into better experiences for my patients.
