On November 6th, 2025 I had a total left replacement at LIJ performed by Dr. James Germano. Dr. Germano and his staff did a fantastic job in preparing me for the surgery and consulting and caring for me after the surgery..I heard from friends how difficult and painful P/T was going to be and I was quite anxious in the beginning. My team, led by Penelope Zaverdas and Shelby McKinney were amazing. They knew my goal was to return to the pickleball courts and they devised a workout regimen for me to do at home as well as at the facility. I can’t lie, the first few weeks were torture but I could see progress. Besides the usual table exercises and manipulations, they made sure my floor exercises were fun and challenging. From the elliptical, leg press to an exercise built for me to mimick the pickleball movement. Four disc that contained a red and blue light were placed on the floor in a row about two feet apart. Penelope gave me a rubber stick to act as a paddle. When one of the disc lit up blue, I would have to laterally move to that disc and swing forehand. When a red light appeared, I would move to that disc and swing backhand. This showed me how much care and creativity that the staff had. My former experiences with other P/T places was that they were “clock watchers”, making sure I was iced up and out the door within one hour. Not so at Orlin & Cohen, sometimes after and hour and fifteen minutes, I would be looking at the clock 😀, but either Penelope or Shelby would be encouraging me to perform a few more tasks. Another wonderful thing was that their was no down time, if Penelope or Shelby were busy with other patients, they made sure their assistants were prepared to instruct me on my next assignment. It’s been 2 months since my surgery and I am very pleased with my progress. I would love to continue my P/T at the Garden City location but I am heading South for the winter and will find some P/T down there and hope it is as nearly as good as Orlin & Cohen. In closing, when I was thinking about getting the surgery, many friends and family members were urging me to go to HSS. I am very happy with my decision and would definitely recommend Orlin & Cohen.
