Following a tennis injury at around fifteen years old, I was in significant pain, and, more than anything, extremely frightened by the prospect of having ACL reconstruction surgery on my left knee. I was scared to experience the pain, and uncertain of what recovery would look like for me. But from the moment I met Dr. Keefer, I knew that I was safe. He explained my options and the procedure so thoroughly and thoughtfully. I will never forget the kindness he showed my parents and me during this difficult time. He answered all of our questions with compassion, and, quite simply, he put my life back together. Since then, I've been more active than ever before, and grateful beyond words for his care. This summer, nearly fifteen years after my initial injury, I had a serious fall while commuting to work. Because of Dr. Keefer, my left knee was stronger than ever and remained perfectly intact. Unfortunately, I knew immediately that I tore my other ACL in my right knee. I rushed right back to Dr. Keefer. This time, I wasn't afraid. I am overwhelmed with gratitude for his endless empathy, his careful attention to my concerns, and his unparalleled ability to perform an ACL reconstruction that results in a stronger, more solid joint than I had before. I had my second ACL surgery this summer. My recovery is progressing wonderfully (and ahead of schedule!) thanks to my physical therapist, Christine Masterson. In short, Christine has changed my life. I admire, and am profoundly grateful for, her tireless commitment to her patients' goals and well-being. Christine cares deeply about educating her patients. During each session, Christine devotes significant one-on-one time to teaching me about form, movement, and the way the body heals. Because of her approach, I have a better understanding of myself and what I need to do in order to achieve my goals; I have applied this knowledge in my own workouts at home, and I've noticed a tremendous difference in my strength, balance, and endurance because of the habits she continues to instill in me. Christine's collaborative approach to my care has made me feel seen and heard every step of the way. She regularly corresponds with my surgeon and other members of my team to ensure that everyone is communicating about my needs and progress. When I ask questions, Christine immediately begins strategizing and problem-solving. Over the last five weeks, Christine has come up with countless creative ways to approach and revitalize my therapy protocol. I have been able to do so much in such a short period of time - this is because Christine is so thoughtful and responsive in the way she structures patients' programs to meet their needs. Christine understands the complex dynamics of recovery following orthopedic surgery - that it challenges patients not only physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. She celebrates my victories alongside me, and has crafted a program that has helped me not only to hit every milestone I set for myself, but to exceed the expectations I've had for my recovery. Because of Christine, I'm excited to go to PT every week. I have been able to accomplish more than I ever thought possible, and I truly don't know where I would be without her.
